We’re Going On A Treasure Hunt! Lesson Outline
When you think about hunting treasure, where do you think about going? (In the yard, on the beach, at an island, etc.) Those are great answers. Today we are going to hunt treasure in a TREE! Your family tree! Let’s get started by picking a treasure from my box. This is a symbol to help you always remember that what we find in your tree today is truly a treasure.
To start a treasure hunt we will need a treasure map. This book is your treasure map.
Your very first clue is your name! There are two places to write your name…on the ME page and on the pedigree chart. The pedigree chart looks like a tree if we turn it sideways. Your name is the beginning of your family tree. In our family tree we try to write a persons complete name, first, middle, last. Can you write your complete name.? If not, write as much as you know, and later, ask someone for help writing your complete name. Can you fill in any other names on your pedigree chart? When we write our mom’s or grandma’s last name, we try to write their maiden name. A maiden name is the last name they had before they got married. If you don’t know their maiden name, you can ask them for help.
Our second clue is a place! Here is another map to help you. Can you color the state where you were born? Can you color the state where your mom and dad, grandma a grandpa’s where born? In our family tree we write a standardized date by writing the city, county, state and country. If we write dates in a standard form, other people will be able to understand what place we are writing about. Can you write the standardized place your where born on the ME page of your treasure map?

Our third clue is a memory. A memory can be a picture, a story, a document or an audio recording. Can anyone share a picture or story with us today? What is something you like doing with your family? On the ME page, can you write down something you want people to learn about you? Can you write down some of your hobbies, interests and favorite traditions?
The last clue we are going to talk about today is a date. Your mom gave you something no one else could give you. What do you think that is? Your BIRTHDATE! To write a standardized date you write the day, month, and year. Be sure to spell out the month. That is a different way of writing your birthdate than what you learned at school. Remember, doing things in a standard way will help other people understand the dates we are writing. Can you write your standardized birthdate on the ME page of your treasure map?

Congratulations on discovering all that treasure in your tree. As you continue to fill in the clues on your treasure map, your tree will grow strong and beautiful. There are many people who can help you find the answeres to all your clues, so be sure to ask LOTS of QUESTIONS and never stop hunting. Your treasure tree will bring you the blessings of family history.
