The Nauvoo Nest: Roots
We have a flowerbed at the Nauvoo Nest that consumes a lot of time and energy due to an invasive species…..Stinging Nettle. Every season it is a coin toss – who will suit up and do battle with the Nettle. After 2 days and a couple inches of rain, I was prepared to dig deeper and uncover more roots than ever before. Oh joy I felt when I found what could possibly be the root of all my troubles. Would this be my last battle with the Stinging Nettle? No! I’m quite sure now that I dug up and eliminated a lily that I have never seen in bloom.
It did give me time to reflect on roots and what is really being dug up at the Nauvoo Nest. Standing in places your ancestor stood is digging deep into your family’s roots. It is a lot of hard work with a reward. Our ancestors faced and overcame some of the same challenges we are daily facing. Looking at those roots gives us a sense that we are fellow soldiers. Their stories become our courage and comfort.
A root is the source of nourishment for a plant. As a mother you nourish your child and there are some things you can never forget…..like the name you gave them. When making plane reservations, I used Emily’s maiden name instead of her married name. It caused a great struggle at the airport, but it was overcome. Brooklyn ended the weekend for us saying, “I had so much fun. I will be back!”
