We’re Going on a Treasure Hunt: SEAGLASS
We walked Utah Beach, in Normandy, France, picking up sea shells and sea glass. Glass is not something we normally want to pick up. It’s sharp edges cut, and we bleed. Sea glass, though, has been weathered with time and water. The edges are no longer sharp. All of us have sharp things in our family history memories, or experiences that bring great sorrow in our lives. Maybe we are afraid of the pain and hesitate to turn the pages of the past.
Time has smoothed the edges! It is now something we can pick up and find healing and hope. These beaches in Normandy have a bloody past. Today the sharp edges have been replaced by countless stories of…sacrifice…selflessness…freedom…compassion….and honor.
Generations later, I experienced the honor. I received a text from my chateau host telling me she had upgraded my room at no cost. My first thought was, “Why?” In the morning she quickly found me and told me I was her American guest. She always gives her best room to the Americans!
