Map My Ancestors: Treasure in Panaca
It was not the time for social distancing! The west was being colonized and 2nd great uncles Meltiar and Ira Hatch were on the front lines! Age and time were given different considerations in the 1860’s. Oftern Meltiar was asked to leave with his family IMMEDIATELY to build up a new settlement. At the age of 17, Uncle Ira embraced a lifetime call as a peace missionary among the Native Americans. He was their fearless friend, speaking 8 indian languages and often risking his life to unite different beliefs and traditions. Today what remains in Eagle Valley, NV and Panaca, NV shows very little evidence of their efforts. As we began the climb to Aspirations Point in St. George, UT, I wondered about what light they experienced on their ascent. As I read rocks painted with encouraging words, I wondered what voices strengthened them, and as I reached a height to see a new horizon, I felt a connection, an understanding. Their vision of unity allowed them to reach into the future and overcome the daily struggles of an uphill climb!
